Inside CECOT: El Salvador’s Most Feared Prison

The Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT, is one of the most controversial prisons in the world. It was built in El Salvador as part of President Nayib Bukele’s campaign against gangs and organized crime.

CECOT is located in Tecoluca and officially opened in 2023. It was designed to hold up to 40,000 inmates, making it one of the largest prisons in the Americas. The prison was created mainly to house suspected gang members arrested during the government’s anti-crime operations.

Reports say many inmates sleep on metal beds without mattresses and remain under constant surveillance.

Supporters of the prison believe it has helped reduce violence and gang activity in El Salvador. Many citizens support the government’s tough approach because crime rates have fallen in recent years. However, human rights organizations argue that the prison’s conditions are inhumane and that some prisoners may be held without fair trials.

Recently, the prison gained even more international attention after reports that migrants and suspected gang members deported from the United States were sent there. Critics say this raises serious concerns about human rights and international law.
